The Hardest Video Games Ever Made
By Elijah on November 28, 2012 - 1:55 am | PermalinkSo you think you’ve got mad skills, just because you can beat your pals at Halo, right? Prepare to have your butt whooped by some of the most difficult games ever made—if you’re man enough.
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
Platform: Playstation 2
Difficulty Rating: “I wanna go home, momma!”

After the relatively easy Devil May Cry 2, Capcom decided to release a game that was a little more difficult. Well, actually, a lot more difficult—so much more difficult, that this game actually had to be re-released as a “special edition” which made it tons easier. In the original version of the game released in the United States, the “normal mode” was actually the same as the Japanese “hard mode”. If you have any experience with Japanese games whatsoever, you know that when they say hard, they mean it. Needless to say, the US “hard mode” was insane.
Contra: Hard Corps
Platform: Sega Genesis
Difficulty Rating: “You want me to shoot HOW many aliens?”

No Konami Code to save you here—this iteration of the Contra franchise is hailed by fans as one of the most difficult alien shoot-'em-ups ever created. Most notably, this Contra has tons more boss battles than the rest of the games. “So there's a boss at the end of every single level?” you ask? Well, yeah, and sometimes there's more than one boss in a single level—sometimes up to six. Also Konami seemed to have ratcheted up the number of aliens too, so even getting to the bosses is more difficult. Have fun.
Ikaruga
Platform: Originally on Dreamcast, now available on Xbox Live Arcade
Difficulty Rating: “I'm not even sure if I'm having fun anymore, but I can't stop playing.”

Ah, the “bullet hell” genre. No other classification of game has been responsible for more angrily broken controllers and/or tears of frustration, and Ikaruga is no exception. A vertical shooter where you have to dodge about fifty billion bullets from other spaceships at a time, prepare yourself to be blown up in every way imaginable. You might want to keep a punching bag nearby, because even the most calm-minded and zen gamers are known to experience supernova-like bouts of rage after playing this game.
