Real Men Love Simian Mobile Disco's "Attack Decay Sustain Release"

Written by David Morgan

Simian Mobile Disco’s debut album “Attack Decay Sustain Release” mixes fierce hooks with relentlessly danceable beats, creating a dozen tracks that real men don’t need to be ashamed of dancing to.  Rising from the ashes of the disbanded rock group Simian, James Ford and James Shaw make analog electronic music that won’t make you want to start ordering appletinis.

The Album Title

“Attack Decay Sustain Release” ostensibly refers to the options for modulating the volume of notes on a synthesizer.  But if it’s not a double-entendre for sex, I don’t know what is.  Though, arguably, it would make even more sense if “Decay” came last.  Also, it’s an album that begins with the word “ATTACK,” and what’s more manly than fighting?

It’s Music Meant for Two Places: Clubs, and Strip Clubs

This is the kind of dance music that people take their clothes off for and during.  Listening to these tracks you can practically smell the fluids.  In particular, “It’s the Beat,” “I Got This Down,” “Hustler,” and “Tits & Acid,” sound like they were written specifically for moderately high-end strip joints.  Or possibly in the kind of Euro-strip clubs you might see in “Hostel.”

It’d be great for a normal club too.  Better to have this stuck in your head for a week than “Umbrella.” Ella.  Ey ey.  Dammit.

Practically Every Other Song Belongs in an 80s-90s Action Movie

Speaking of music in movies, the first track, “Sleep Deprivation” sounds like it was lifted directly from the “Fight Club” soundtrack, with some “Mortal Kombat”-esque tones thrown in for good measure.  “It’s the Beat” (featuring The Go! Team lead singer Ninja) sounds like the part of a different action movie where the hero cop is searching for the witness who is going to testify against the Russian mob.  “Hot Dog” and/or “Wooden” could be playing during the big climactic fight scene. “I Believe” should play over the end credits.  So get working on that terrible movie, Brett Ratner.

The American Release has Two Bonus Tracks

“Clock” and “System” are two songs that did not appear on the original British release.  They’re not exactly the best songs on the album, but as all men know, more is more.

You Can Drink to It

“Can’t I drink to anything?”  Well, sure.  But the intensity of the beats and the infectious hooks are practically intoxicating in their own right.  A couple beers could definitely enhance the experience.  “Doesn’t alcohol enhance everything?”  Shut up, rummy!

The Video for “Hustler” is Almost Entirely Hot Chicks...Eating Crap

This video pretty vividly establishes why Simian Mobile Disco is a manly group.  A good music video is one that makes the watcher wish the song went on forever, and that’s definitely the case here.  So we’ll leave you with this, and encourage you to check out the first album by a band you’ll be hearing a lot of in the next few years.  You stopped reading at “hot chicks,” didn’t you? You're in for a surprise...
