Being a leader isn't as easy as it seems, most people are content taking directions and following others for most of their lives. While it is important to be able to take directions, it's also important to be able to take on the leadership role when given the chance, or duty calls per say. Be Decisive

This is the basis of being a leader, Being able to make decisions. For example if you're placed in a leadership position, and you're faced with a decision making situation you need to act. You should already have the information you need to make any decisions you encounter in a rational way. Being decisive does not mean being impulsive, If you're placed in a leadership role you should have the knowledge and know-how to make the right decisions at the right time.
Have No Ego

A great leader knows how to take advice, and is able to work with his peers in a great way. When people come together it creates a different atmosphere, being able to see where people are best fit to be is a great asset to being a leader. Creating a synergestic enviornment where everyone feeds eachothers drive is ideal, like minded individiuals will create an even better driving force behind their project. So being a leader isn't just about instructing, it's also about taking advice, listening to people, working with people, and creating the ideal enviornment for your project.
Finish What You Start

This goes hand in hand with Being able to make decisions. Once you make a decision you should be able to stick to it until the very end, win or fail. That way you know how to proceed next time. A great leader always finishes what they start regardless of what it is. If they don't think they could finish it, then they never start it in the first place. So when your time comes to be a leader, no matter if it's at the work-place, adventuring with friends, or a beer run, always finish what you start. No one likes wounded soldiers.
