Fight Club: Get Smart's Box Office VS The Love Guru's Box Office

GET SMART

Strengths: Steve Carell is in a hit show ("The Office") and has opened a decently big movie in the last three years (2005's "The 40-Year-Old Virgin"). He seems like genuinely nice guy. His film is a remake of a popular TV series ("Get Smart") which has fans both from its original run and its run on Nick At Nite. The trailer received a couple laughs when it was shown before a movie I saw. It co stars Anne Hathaway (who starred in a pretty big film, "The Devil Wears Prada") and the fat guy from "Borat."

Weaknesses: It's 54% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Carell's last big budget summer comedy ("Evan Almighty") completely bombed (so much so, in fact, that it was reported to have hurt comedy movies in general for years to come). Everyone I know who likes Steve Carell will still not be seeing it and everyone I know who likes the "Get Smart" TV series is either dead or nonexistent. 

THE LOVE GURU

Strengths: Mike Myers wrote and stars in the film (the last time he did that was in 2002's "Austin Powers 3: Goldmember," which, despite sucking, made over $200 million). The last movie starring Mike Myers was last year's "Shrek The 3rd," which made almost (gasp) $800 million worldwide. It costars Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake, who both have healthy fan bases.

Weaknesses: This looks like the worst movie ever made. It's 14% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. It's about a love guru, which is some shit no one knows/cares about. A large portion of the film is set in Canada.
