Cultures Are Weird: Strange Customs From Around the World
August 28, 2012 - 8:57 am | PermalinkIf you’ve been raised in the typical western household, some of the customs from around the world must seem pretty strange. Here’s a list of the most off-the-wall, bizarre “traditions” that people actually take part in.
What: Monkey Buffet Festival
Where: Thailand

If you thought this tradition involved Thai people eating monkeys, you are officially a racist, uncultured swine. No, just kidding. It's actually even weirder—this “buffet” in question is for the monkeys. Residents set up over sixthousand pounds of fruit, and it's all for the monkeys that live in the Lopburi province of Bangkok. Being a monkey in Thailand must be like being a cow in India, except more awesome, since you don't have to eat Indian food.
What: Pooping dolls
Where: Spain

Honestly, this sounds like a pretty awesome tradition. Every Christmas, the folks in Catalonia hide little pooping statuettes of various characters, which are meant to be found by family and friends. It's kind of like an Easter-egg hunt, but for defecation enthusiasts. Pardon me, I'm off to bid on a dumping Spider Man doll on Ebay.
What: Snaggleteeth
Where: Japan
You know how that one kid in school always got mocked on the playground because she had a snaggletooth? In Japan, she would have been a star. Snaggleteeth—or, as the locals call them, yaeba—are a sign of beauty and cuteness. So much so that many girls actually have dental surgery to have their normal teeth filed into those strangely adorable little points.
What: Feminist empowerment
Where: Scotland

When a woman in Scotland decides to get married, she has to go through something of a disgusting and humiliating ritual, assuming she wants to keep this awesome tradition alive. Basically, her friends are supposed to surprise her and throw buckets of rotten eggs, spoiled milk, and other disgusting things on her. Supposedly, if the girl can endure this, she'll see any problems that arise in the marriage as less significant. You just know that some drunk Scottish dudes came up with this one.
