This isn't alarming at all—OpenAI's Universe program is teaching AI agents how to drive. Cool, right? Universe is a program that trains machine-learning agents with video games. And the video game the software is using to train the AI is... Grand Theft Auto V. Yes, the game where you RUN PEOPLE OVER FOR FUCKING FUN.
According to The Register, the open-sourced MIT-licensed code is maintained by Craig Quiter, who works for the Über-owned start up, Otto. According to Quiter, “[Integrating with Universe] was a perfect fit because GTA V runs in Windows, and Universe allows running the AI separate from the game; in Linux, for example, where most AI work is done.” Apparently, the AI software comes programmed with a trained driving agent, so developers just need a copy of Grand Theft Auto 5 to use the software.
So, to recap the next generation of self-driving cars are being trained by Grand Theft Auto. Apparently all the violence has been removed from the system, but somehow I don't trust it. If that AI gets out of GTA what I got out of GTA, they'll just be running over everybody trying to see how high they can get their Wanted level before the military takes them out. If you need me, I'll be completely avoiding the outdoors from now on. Or investing in a tank. It's pretty hard to hit and run a tank.
