Steve's Daughters' Top Ten Films of 2016

Last year I began a tradition with my daughters, Clementine and Elanora, wherein we'd go through every movie they saw that year and rank them from best to worst. I didn't keep a record of their lists, but if memory serves all three of us selected Inside Out as the best movie of the 2015. This year I documented their picks and can now bring them to you unfiltered and uncut.

Ten year old Clementine favored a more eclectic mix of films than seven year old Elanora, but Nora tells me that Clem's favorites all have "cute boys" in them, so that may account for some of her ratings. At the risk of embarrassing them any further, here's the list of films they saw in the theater in 2016...

Kung Fu Panda 3

The Jungle Book

Captain America: Civil War

The Angry Birds Movie

X-Men: Apocalypse

Alice Through the Looking Glass

Finding Dory

The Secret Life of Pets

Star Trek Beyond

Nine Lives

Kubo and the Two Strings

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

In an effort to break their father's poor heart, neither of them ranked Kubo and the Two Strings in their top ten, and both girls placed Rogue One dead last on their lists. That's somewhat understandable, though, as Rogue One was one hell of a downer, especially compared with Force Awakens, which they both loved. Even still, it's clear that these young ladies have unique tastes and aren't opposed to watching a wide variety of films, even if they don't like them all.

It's also interesting to see how much their opinion of Zootopia changed over the course of the year. They loved it when we saw it in March, but Clem ranked it at 18 and Nora at 16. I think they got burned out from watching it too many times, which I also imagine will further erode other films that they currently rank at or near the top.

This is a fun exercise that I wholeheartedly recommend for any parents out there in 2017. The only thing you need to make sure to do is keep a record of which movies you watch—you don't have to limit it to theaters, but if you get up over 20, it becomes more and more difficult for them to narrow them down.

Clementine's Top 10 Films of 2016

10. Kung Fu Panda 3

9. The BFG

8. The Jungle Book

7. Captain America: Civil War

6. Nine Lives

5. Sing

4. The Secret Life of Pets

3. Star Trek Beyond

2. Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life

1. X-Men: Apocalypse

As you can see, Clem's tastes speak to her ever growing maturity, but also her childlike sense of wonder. As far as her love of X-Men: Apocalypse goes, it was the first X-Men movie she ever saw, so that might speak to her love of it more than anything else. It's also interesting to note that seven out of her ten picks are (predominantly) live action movies, another sign that she's getting older.

Elanora's Top 10 Films of 2016

10. Storks

9. Ghostbusters

8. Finding Dory

7. The BFG

6. Sing

5. The Secret Life of Pets

4. Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life

3. Moana

2. Nine Lives

1. Trolls

It's funny to me how the one live action movie that Nora loved which Clem did not was Ghostbusters. The other live action films in her Top 10 are also in Clem's, but if you look at the bottom of Nora's list, it's riddled with movies Clem liked (Star Trek Beyond at 19, Captain America: Civil War at 18, and X-Men: Apocalypse at 17). One thing is certain... They loved that movie where Kevin Spacey turns into a cat. My god did they love that movie.

There's a world of difference between being 10 and being 7, and I hope you were able to glean as much from this as we were. Until this time next year, have a great year of moviegoing in 2017!
