You will never be as cool as Michael Shannon. The sooner you accept this, the happier you'll be. If you're ready to accept this as a fact—or already have accepted it—come along with me and listen to a tale of the time Michael Shannon slept his way through Batman v Superman, a film in which he technically reprised his role as General Zod, though it looked to be a Michael Shannon dummy rather than the real deal.
Shannon recently spoke with The Playlist about his upcoming appearance in Nocturnal Animals—his tenth film being released this year—when talk turned to a film he technically appeared in this year, but apparently never watched... Batman v Superman: Dawn on Justice. Well, in fairness to Shannon, he did try to watch it but his body had other plans for him during those two and a half hours.
When asked what he thought of the film he responded, “People ask me about this all the time. Okay, I’ll tell you the god’s honest truth. Zack [Snyder] is gonna kill me for this — he’s gonna kill me. I watched it once and I fell asleep,” he admitted. “I know, I know… I was on an international flight and I was tired… I shouldn’t have been watching it on a plane. But I never go to the movies anymore! I don’t have time to see anything. I used to go to the movies all the time when I was 20 years old and wasn’t working 10 days a week.”
Honestly, though, if you've seen Batman v Superman, you know precisely why he slept through it. It's horribly boring and shockingly uneventful, even for a Zack Snyder movie. I will happily admit that most of my favorite things about the film involved Michael Shannon—or at least the dummy they made of him—and I would still pay to see a movie where Jesse Eisenberg drags that Michael Shannon dummy around... Like Swiss Army Man, but watchable.
