If a Claire's attained sentience and manifested itself in human form, I'm guessing the result would look a lot like Johnny Depp. Therefore, it makes sense that he would finally join the most accessory crazy franchise in history, J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World. Seriously, those movies are full of people wearing flowing robes and using various baubles to time travel or whatever. He's gonna be right at home in this world, starting with a small cameo in the November 18th release Fancy Lads and Where to Find Them.
However, our earlier reports of him playing Sebastian Scarvelous, owner of Marvelous Scarvelous' Scarves for the Somnambulant, were 100% false and were actually made up in full. No, he's playing that other character he was rumored to be playing, Gellert Grindelwald, the wizard who dueled at length with Albus Dumbledore, and was even the object of the future Hogwarts Headmaster's affections. This small cameo will set him up for a larger role in the already-in-pre-production sequel due out in 2018.
The next question has to be, who is playing a young Dumbledore, which begs the further question of who is the young Richard Harris and/or Michael Gambon? If you're going the Richard Harris route, then you just cast Jared Harris. That's what every other movie does. The young Michael Gambon is more tricky though. A twenty years younger Geoffrey Rush seems like the unattainable choice. Colin Firth seems like the next most obvious answer, but I'll throw my vote behind Ben Whishaw. He's a delight in everything.
