TV Review: Luke Cage S1 E6: That Can't Be It...

Season 1, Episode 6: "Suckas Need Bodyguards"

Well, Brandy finally got her way with ol' Scarfe on this episode. I'll say this for Frank Whaley. I was a big fan of his back in the day (roughly 1990-1992) and he really did a great job playing this scumbag cop. I mean, just read any of Brandy's reviews (links at the bottom) to see how much she hated this dude, and I think that's a testament to how well Whaley played him. His character needed to go, for sure, but I didn't need any kind of last minute redemption for him, which this episode more or less insists upon doing, but we'll get to that in a minute...

To reiterate Brandy's sentiment from the last episode, it's so great to have Rosario Dawson's Claire back, and even better, it's great that they're not trying to shoehorn in a romance between her and Mike Colter's Luke, because ain't nobody got time for that. I do hope she helps to shake him out of his complacency. Dude seems content to just hang out in her mom's diner and utter wishy-washy bromides like "I ain't no hero." We get it dude, with great power and all that, but get up off your ass and let this woman help you!

Of course there's not even much time for that as Scarfe soon makes his way to Pop's following a deadly run-in with Cottonmouth (Mahershala Ali)

Cottonmouth shot Scarfe after Scarfe mouthed off to him about getting his "peacock ass" punked by Luke Cage. Adding insult to injury, he shot him with Scarfe's own gun which the dipshit detective was fumbling with as he never went to the academy. So when Scarfe drags himself to Pop's, barely alive, he offers Luke and Claire mountains of evidence against Cottonmouth. The only catch is that they're hidden away in his apartment which is being heavily surveilled after his encounter with Cottonmouth.

Luke manages to sneak in and out of Scarfe's apartment without Misty (Simone Missick) catching him, but honestly, she's got enough problems of her own, what with discovering that her new partner Perez (Manny Perez) is on the take from Cottonmouth. It does lead to my favorite line of the entire series thus far, when she finally gets the better of him and says—while pointing a gun in his face—"Cuff yourself you piece of shit!"

So it looks for a minute as though Cottonmouth is done for, but then the show is like, "Oh wait, we've got seven more episodes, let's write ourselves right out of this corner." Basically, with the bulk of the evidence coming from a corrupt cop like Scarfe, who's now dead (in the most ignoble way possible), Captain Audrey (Sonja Sohn) essentially tells Misty to forget it because it's Chinatown. Or something. It doesn't make any sense for us to follow this storyline about gathering mountains of evidence against Cottonmouth just for the captain to say that the case is weak and they're letting him go is pretty stupid. I'm not sure where they're headed with this, but I hope it's to a land where we're not just doing things for the sake of prolonging the story.

Body Count: 1

Poor Scarfe is dead, but here you go Brandy, I found this and figured you would enjoy it...
