If you've ever wanted to hear Chris Pine's William Shatner impression, get ready! In the above gag reel, right around the 35 second mark (Greg Grunberg messing up his lines is your cue) you can hear Pine's Shatner-esque delivery of the line "Full impulse, Mr. Sulu." It's pretty great, even though it only happens the once. Simon Pegg gets in a pretty great line to kick things off as well.
The gag reel comes to us from Yahoo! and it's courtesy of the upcoming Blu-ray release of Star Trek Beyond, and features plenty of great moments that didn't make the final cut of the film. Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I feel Star Trek Beyond was the best big budget movie of the summer. I don't know if that's heaping praise on the film because it was an absolutely awful summer top to bottom.
Not to be outdone, Entertainment Weekly also got in on the action with another bonus feature from the disc, this one featuring director Justin Lin and the advice he got from J.J. Abrams prior to helming the film. “I remember my initial conversation with J.J. — he was kind of handing over the keys, and saying, ‘Just be bold, make it yours,’” shared Lin. “I tried to take that to heart and I feel like every frame of this film, whether it’s a big action sequence or some small decision, I go back to that initial conversation of being bold. And I think that will show for everybody that watches the film.”
For his part, the film's writer and co-star Simon Pegg felt Lin was the right man for the job based on his own ideas for how to take the franchise in a new direction. “Justin, to his credit, was like, ‘Should I do this? Because people obviously associate me with kind of land transport movies,’” laughed Pegg. “But it just felt like another nice anachronism that would be fun, and we also like the idea of them having to use very old human things to try and win out.”
All this and more can be yours when Star Trek Beyond hits Blu-ray on November 1!
