Aquaman isn't due in theaters for two more years, but director James Wan loves talking about all of the things that we're in for when it opens. Wan has promised us in the past all manner of wacky shit in the film, along with something that's got his unique director's stamp on it, and now he's letting us know that the film will be a swashbuckling adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Wan said that he envisions the film as a hybrid of two franchises that peaked thirty years ago. “It’s a quest story potentially in the spirit of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ meets ‘Romancing the Stone,'” Wan said before adding, “I kind of don’t want to give too much away, but know this: The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story.”
Wan went on to confirm DC's policy of allowing their team-up movies to set up the standalone movies—which is the exact opposite of the Marvel formula—saying, “I think Amber [Heard] and Jason Momoa, in their moments in ‘Justice League,’ is going to give the rest of the world a flavor of what their own standalone movie could be. And that is just scratching the surface of what I plan to do.”
There's plenty of potential for this film to be something different and unique, so I hope Wan doesn't rely too much on any existing formula in bringing it to life.
