It was a rough summer for DC. Their DCEU entry Suicide Squad was an underwhelming mess, and their animated entry The Killing Joke leaned in to DC's worst tendencies. One of the only things that DC has working in its favor at the moment is their television lineup, which is doing a solid job of bringing these characters to life in interesting ways. Therefore, news of a new series will come as no surprise, but their choice of hero to headline the series is a strange one... Black Lightning.
Deadline is reporting that DC producer extraordinaire, Greg Berlanti—the man behind Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and more—is teaming up with husband and wife writing team Salim and Mara Brock Akil to bring Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning, to life.
Written by the Akils, Black Lightning centers on Jefferson Pierce. He made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.
Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil executive produce with Berlanti Prods.’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.
Those are all of the available details at the moment, but we'll keep you up to date with the latest. Anyone out there excited for Black Lightning coming into the DC TV Universe? Sound off in the comments section below!
