Pre-production for Infinity War has officially begun. Now just the one movie instead of an epic two-parter, the movie will be the culmination of an overarching plot woven throughout all Marvel movies ever since the studio realized that they were going to have to keep making these things forever.
To promote the release of Captain America: Civil War on DVD and Blu-Ray, the Russo Brothers, who directed the film and will also be helming Infinity War, spoke about their upcoming work in an interview with Yahoo Movies.
First, the burning issue that has gripped comic book movie fans across the world: will Squirrel Girl appear in the film? Sadly, the answer is no, although the Russo Brothers did recommend fan favorite Anna Kendrick for the role.
In touching on this, though, the directorial pair tipped their hand about the possible inclusion of Captain Marvel in the movie: Anthony Russo commented that the duo have their “hands full trying to tell the story we have with our preexisting characters”.
But what about Captain Marvel, a character that has been cast as which is expected to appear in the MCU sooner rather than later? According to Joe Russo:
“Anthony would probably die from exhaustion if we introduced another character. That’s not to say we’re not going to introduce a new character.”
So apparently the Russo brothers aren’t long for this world, as, from the sounds of it, they’ll be introducing somebody new in the next film.
Captain Marvel is the logical choice – her powers and origin are all tied to the cosmic side of the Marvel universe, making her a perfect fit for a movie which will see the Avengers team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Russo Brothers have spoken before about how they planned out Civil War, and have said that they refused to allow Marvel to consider a version of the film that didn’t have Spider-Man in it.
It’s clear from their inclusion of the Web Head in their early planning, along with the introduction of the Black Panther, that they like to get all of the action figures out of the toy chest when working on a film.
This is all a bit vague and speculative, though - will Captain Marvel be appearing in Infinity War, or not?
“If they ever cast that role, maybe,” says Anthony Russo, “Do you know if they’ve cast it yet?”
In case you missed the announcement, Oscar winner Brie Larson has been cast as Captain Marvel. Judging from Anthony Russo’s comments, it sounds like the pair are definitely considering throwing her into the mix for Infinity War.
