Just a few days ago, the team here at Double Viking were reminiscing on the joyless drudgery that is Spider-Man 3.
A movie which introduced a black version of a popular red and blue suit, it also came with an attempt at a far darker tone that didn’t quite sit with some of the sillier moments throughout the film.
Now, it looks dangerously like history might be about to repeat itself, if Henry Cavill’s Instagram can be taken at face value.
Yesterday, the star posted a close-up photo of a black version of his Superman costume – or at least, that’s what fans are assuming it is. Cavill could just be playing with the filters on his camera.
If this is an actual costume choice for Justice League, rather than just Cavill messing around with his phone, it suggests the potential direction that the movie will go with the Last Son of Krypton.
Superman’s worn a black costume multiple times in the comics, most notably following his resurrection after dying at the hands of Doomsday. The black costume introduced a darker, edgier Superman who sported a mullet and was decidedly less optimistic about humanity.
Considering Zack Snyder’s love of recreating comic books frame-for-frame on the big screen, and his penchant for picking and choosing his favorite pieces of comic book stories with little regard for their wider context, it makes sense that he’d also want to cherry pick elements from Superman’s return for his next film.
It’s especially fitting considering the fact that Snyder is up front about his disdain for Superman and the ideals that the character represents – as has been proven in two movies, Snyder’s version of Superman really isn’t that interested in saving humanity. A grumpier, darker, resurrected Supes will better fit Snyder’s vision for the character.
This is also more than a little concerning for those fans who do enjoy Superman as an inspirational figure – after all, it’s hard to think how Snyder’s Superman can get any darker. Any movie franchise that depicts its hero drowning in a lake of human skulls is already pretty much at peak darkness, right?
Hopefully Cavill’s post doesn’t provide any significant insight into Zack Snyder’s vision for the Justice League. If Superman does get any darker, Emo Peter Parker will look pretty tame by comparison.
