After fans in Hall H got to see the first footage from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 last weekend, the most buzzed about thing on social media was Baby Groot, and how he's going to steal the movie. One of the big question marks surrounding the character, however, is whether or not this new incarnation of Groot is the same as the first film. In other words, does he still have his memories and personality from before his sacrifice or has that been wiped away? Well, now we have an answer, directly from Kevin Feige himself.
In an interview with Collider, Feige confirmed that Baby Groot is the same Groot we know and love, and even used an example from Star Trek to prove his point. "He remembers. He’s not mentally a baby, he is still Groot… I sort of equate it to Spock circa the end of Search for Spock and The Voyage Home.” Right, but that's not a great analogy, Kev, because Spock gave Bones his memories for safe keeping... but I get your point. He continued, “When it comes to a Guardians of the Galaxy film, a James Gunn script, it’s not just about the funny, it’s not just about the action, it’s about the heart. And the amount of heart that you get out of this trash panda raccoon and now this little twig baby Groot is actually awe-inspiring. It is amazing what he’s done with those two characters.”
So it looks like we can expect an even more adorable dynamic between the two smallest members of the Guardians in this flick. May 5, 2017 can't get here soon enough.
