It's been a long time since Clint Eastwood won an Oscar. It's been an even longer time since Tom Hanks has taken one home. Therefore it makes perfect sense that these two giants of the film industry should team up for a film that's going to garner plenty of attention from the Academy.
Their first project together, Sully, has all the hallmarks of Oscar bait: It's a biopic about an American hero played by one of the most respected actors alive with plenty of intrigue and adversity crammed into two-plus hours. I will say that the trailer is terrifically engaging and looks like it's going to be a hell of a ride—provided you're not screening it on an airplane. I was 110% with this trailer until they brought up the possibility of him being drunk, and then I'm taken immediately out of the trailer because I'm now thinking about Flight, a decent enough movie, but one with its fair share of problems.
I'll be first in line to see this film—likely with some anti-anxiety meds on hand as I'm not a good flier—but I'll be the first to admit that this looks like it's begging for Oscars. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Also, sweet 'stache Aaron Eckhart. Glad to see you in a decent looking movie again.
