Box Office Mojo has updated their list of the highest grossing actors of all time—in other words, the combined box office of their filmography—and Scarlett Johansson has become the first woman to break into the Top 10. Granted she's ranked right at number ten, but this is huge news for movie studios who continue to operate under the impression that women can't be box office draws.
As you can see, the only other woman in the Top 20 is Cameron Diaz, which is somewhat surprising until you remember that she was in all four of those Shrek movies. The next woman on the list is Helena Bonham Carter at 26, followed by a female heavy lineup of Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts, Elizabeth Banks, and Emma Watson coming in at 29 through 32 respectively.
It's an eclectic mix, to be sure, as is the entire list. Obviously Scarlett was helped into the Number 10 slot by her work in the MCU, but did anyone expect to see Stellan Skarsgard at 14? Holy shit! People seem to love the dude, and what's not to love? As for other MCU stars, Scarlett ranks third behind Sam Jackson at number two and RDJ at five. Scarlett's way ahead of the other male Avengers, however, like Don Cheadle (23), Jeremy Renner (44), Chris Evans (48), Mark Ruffalo (100), Chris Hemsworth (102), Paul Rudd (130), and Clark Gregg (152).
I'm not entirely sure why Marvel's gun shy regarding a Black Widow movie, but it would make mad bank and hopefully help ScarJo leap over Michael Caine and noted accessory enthusiast Johnny Depp. Get on it, Marvel!
