If there's one area in which DC is far ahead of Marvel, it's in the realm of direct-to-video animated features. Marvel's output on this front has been abysmal, whereas even DC's lesser efforts—like New Frontier, gorgeously illustrated in the style of Darwyn Cooke—are still worth watching. Best of all, for their upcoming adaptation of noted reclusive warlock Alan Moore's classic Batman story The Killing Joke, they've recruited an amazing Joker/Batman duo.
Fans of Batman: The Animated Series will be doing a happy dance today when they learn that Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill will be reprising their respective roles as The Caped Crusader and The Clown Prince of Crime in the upcoming film. Both Warner Brothers Home Entertainment and Hamill himself confirmed the news yesterday, though Hamill did it with a little more flair...
For a generation of fans, Hamill is the definitive Joker, so it will be great to see him tackle this iconic storyline. Whether or not it'll work within the PG-13 confines established by prior adaptations like Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns remains to be seen, but this casting is a huge step in the right direction.
