A friend and I have long harbored a theory that Ridley Scott is the best trailer director ever made. In other words, no matter how bad the film he directed is, it'll cut together into a hell of a two and a half minute trailer. If Triple 9 turns out to suck, I may have to tell my buddy that John Hillcoat has replaced Scott as the best guy making awesome trailers and mediocre movies.
There's no denying this trailer looks badass as hell, but so did The Proposition, The Road, and Lawless, and all of those films turned out to be mediocre at best. This one appears to be Hillcoat's first without Guy Pearce in it, but the cast he assembled more than makes up for it, featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, and Kate Winslet. This movie opens next weekend, and virtually no one has heard about it. It's very odd to me. Maybe it's trash, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if the studio were trying to polish a turd considering how great that trailer looks, but I'll take a wait and see approach.
