this writer's strike is the craziest thing. if i own a restaurant, i buy plates from plate makers. the plate makers have a price for their product. once you buy it, you FUCKING OWN IT. the plate makers dont say... i want a piece of the cost of every dinner you serve on each plate. if they did, id say FUCK YOU PLATE MAKERS... ILL FIND ANOTHER.
lets try another scenario. cars.... car makers dont get a piece of every limo ride..... BECAUSE I OWN THE GODDAMN LIMO.... if writers dont like what they get paid..... there are jobs at walmart..... they should quit their fucking crying. im a democrat that thinks unions have "outlived" their usefulness to society, ..... and if i provide the restaurant.. i get the people... i do the advertising..... those motherfucking plate people better keep their fucking mouths shut and make fucking plates. Let's say that right now, restaurant owners pay a dollar per plate. Now, let's say that they don't like paying that full dollar up front, so they strike a deal so that they pay a dime per plate, plus .04% of every dollar that plate makes them in the future. For a while, everything's fine... but suddenly, people stop using the plates to eat from, but competitive plate spinning in restaurants becomes a billion dollar industry, and the restaurants claim that they no longer have to pay the plate makers the .04% because the plate spinning rage didn't exist when the contract was signed. They want to pay the deferred rate, but they don't want to pay that which they've deferred.

Writing is a commodity, and it makes a lot of people a lot of money. If they don't want to pay the writers their full worth up front, they have to at least not strip them of the deferred payments they tacitly agreed upon.

Unions won't have outlived their usefulness until management stops trying to exploit labor. Management is always implicitly unified. Why shouldn't labor be? Because you're bitter about not making royalties from your plate-making business?

listen... we arent talking about J.K.Rowling type writers here....we are talking about hacks who write mental pablum to entertain the great unwashed masses to sell them toothpaste, mouthwash and deoderant in middle of it.... people who wrote things like... SAVED BY THE BELL...or friends.... ok?? not news writers... not anyone who creates anything of value......pbs will still make nova...msnbc news will still happen........ im sure the so called writers already get paid WAAAYYYY more than i do and have MUCH better lives....... dont get me wrong.. i like john stewart and stephen colbert... but if they cant write their own goddamn material... do they DESERVE to be on tv??? i can live without them.... and aside from their shows...i really dont watch anything else... so.... the rest can go fuck their moms. like i said... if they dont like the pay... and the jobs....... walmart is hiring.

maybe the writers should organize and grow some balls and start their own tv stations.... you know.... TAKE THE RISK OF BUSINESS so they can have ALL THE REVENUES of their "creativity"... and i use the term loosely.

LETS ALL JUST WATCH NEWS OR PBS UNTIL THEY GIVE US A PIECE OF THEIR ACTION DAMNIT... fucking babies. if they had a hair on their ass they would be self employeed and not waiting like little birds with their little beaks upturned waiting for the eagle to puke money down their throat for their petty contribution. the writers would be nothing with out the viewers. i want money from them too.

or maybe.... maybe "management"... should negotiate with the writers on this tack..... "ok... if you want a piece of our successes.... you must also pay money for failures. if we lose money... YOU HAVE TO PAY US!!"... see.... THAT is assuming the risks of business... and if they want a piece of the action, they must also suffer the losses of the "risks of business"..... should the people who wrote series or movies or what the hell ever, THAT FAILED, should they have to GIVE BACK THEIR PAY FOR WRITING??? and suffer some of the losses that business owners take the risk of, every fucking day?

i cant see how they should....

so unless they expect to share in the HUGE LOSSES that occur, as well as the successes.. and future success.... they should shut their motherfucking pieholes. "i want to be paid for what i did.... you invest the money..... ill write something..... if it succeeds..... i want a piece of your action in perpetuity.... if it fails.... i still want to keep the money i get paid for writing.... and you can eat the multi million dollar losses"

It's a three way transaction. The viewers yield their time to advertisers; in return they receive entertainment. The networks produce entertainment for the viewers; in return they are paid by the advertisers. The advertisers get time to promote their products; in return they pay the networks. The writers are employees of the network.

You don't exhibit any evidence that you know how any of this works. YOU DO GET PAID FOR WATCHING THE ADVERTISEMENTS. You just get paid in programming: whether that programming comes in the form of "Friends" or your repetitive talking heads is up to you, but you're fooling yourself if you think you're somehow making a difference by watching Chris Matthews. They all feed at the same trough.

if the so-called writers risk nothing but shoe leather, pencil lead, printer ink, and gas..... they should get a paycheck and insurance and be happy they arent working in a kitchen somewhere. or perhaps they should have learned something valuable in college like the people in management did.

oh, see... i thought... companies got into the business of programming..... to get money from advertisers.... and that WE are just doped dupes, lulled into hypnotic compliance by the crap, mind numbing programs distracting us from reality for 30 minutes or an hour..... dangled in front of us like a fishing lure in a pond....so that the advertisers can mind fuck us every 12 minutes or so... to express cash from us........ and the programmers express cash from the advertisers. i never actually considered that programming.. might be like pay..... i always saw it as horseshit being fed to a captive audience..... but never as pay......... i want a fucking raise.

The only way you're getting screwed is if you're watching programming that you don't want to watch, and -- at that point -- you're only screwing yourself. BTW, the news writer strike is pending, it'll start any day now, and the fact that you consider that garbage to be informative is more comedy than any writer could provide.
